Technician spot-treating weeds on a Dallas lawn

The cheapest weed control is the kind that stops them from sprouting.

Most homeowners think of weed control as something you do once you see weeds. By the time you see them, you've already lost. Crabgrass, dallisgrass, broadleaf weeds — they all have a germination window in spring that lasts a few weeks. Once they're up, they're harder to kill, take more product to control, and they've already stressed your good grass by competing for water and nutrients.

Real weed control starts in February with a pre-emergent application that stops weeds from ever germinating. It's cheaper than fighting them after they've sprouted, less stressful on your lawn, and dramatically more effective. That's what our DFW weed control program is built around.

What pre-emergent actually does.

Pre-emergent herbicide creates a barrier in the top layer of soil that prevents weed seeds from germinating. It doesn't kill anything that's already growing — it just stops new weeds from sprouting through. Timing is everything: applied too early, the barrier breaks down before crabgrass is ready to germinate. Applied too late, you've missed the window.

For DFW lawns, the sweet spot is mid-to-late February — usually the last week of February through the first week of March. Soil temps at 4 inches start hitting 50°F around that time, which is when crabgrass starts to germinate. Our pre-emergent application is timed precisely to that window each year.

Post-emergent: targeted, not broadcast.

Some weeds will still come up — every year, in every yard, no matter how well-timed your pre-emergent is. For those, we use targeted post-emergent spot treatments rather than broadcast sprays. Spot treatment puts product only where weeds are growing, which means less chemical use, less stress on surrounding turf, and lower cost than a broadcast approach. Our technicians walk your lawn during each visit, identify weeds by species, and apply the right product to each.

What's included.

Here's exactly what you can expect when you book weed control with Goat Kings:

  • February pre-emergent application — Stops crabgrass and annual weeds before they germinate. The most important treatment of the year.
  • Targeted post-emergent spot treatment — Specific products for specific weeds — no broadcast spraying.
  • TX-licensed applicators — All chemical applications by Texas-licensed technicians, compliant with state regulations.
  • Safe for kids & pets — Products are safe for re-entry once dry — usually 1-2 hours after application.
  • Service notes after each visit — You'll know exactly what was applied, where, and what to expect.
  • Day-of text notification — A text the day of application so you can plan around it.

How it works.

01. Initial weed audit. On the first visit our technician walks the yard and identifies any existing weed pressure by species.

02. February pre-emergent. Applied during the precise late-February to early-March window to stop crabgrass germination.

03. Post-emergent spot treatments. Throughout the growing season, targeted to specific weeds as they appear.

04. Fall pre-emergent. A second pre-emergent in October targets winter weeds like poa annua and chickweed.

Weed Control for the DFW climate.

North Texas isn't like everywhere else, and lawn-care companies that treat it like it is end up with mediocre results. Our entire approach to weed control is calibrated for the soil, climate, grass varieties, and HOA expectations of the DFW Metroplex. We've been refining it since 2010 across hundreds of weekly clients in Southlake, Grapevine, Keller, Colleyville, Trophy Club, Westlake, and North Richland Hills.

Common questions

Weed Control — FAQs.

How much does weed control cost in DFW?
Most DFW weed control programs run $50-$80 per application with 4-6 applications per year. Most clients combine it with our fertilization program for a complete lawn health package; combined pricing is typically more economical than buying them separately.
Is your weed killer safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use products that are safe for kids and pets once dry — typically 1-2 hours after application. We send a text notification the day of treatment so you can keep them off the lawn briefly.
Will weed control kill my grass?
No. Our products are selective herbicides that target broadleaf and grassy weeds while leaving turfgrass unharmed. Our licensed applicators use the right product for the specific weed species, which avoids the broad-spectrum damage that DIY products often cause.
What's the difference between pre-emergent and post-emergent?
Pre-emergent prevents weeds from germinating in the first place — it creates a soil barrier. Post-emergent kills weeds that have already sprouted. Effective weed control uses both: pre-emergent in February and October to head off most weeds, and post-emergent spot treatments for anything that still comes up.
How long until I see results?
Pre-emergent is preventative — you see results by not seeing weeds. Post-emergent visible results show up within 7-14 days for most species. Stubborn weeds like nutsedge and dallisgrass may need multiple applications.
